S/S Island

The "Island" was built for the Thingvalla Line in 1882 by Burmeister & Wain, Copenhagen as a passenger and cargo ship. She had a tonnage of 2,844 tons gross, 1,993 under deck and 1,819 net. She was 324.4 feet long, 39.1 foot beam and holds 22 feet deep (length 95,40m x beam 11,95m). She was constructed in iron, straight stem, one funnel, three masts (Schooner), single screw and a service speed of 11 knots. Propulsion: compound engine with 4 cylinders of 36 and 72 inches diameter each pair; stroke 42 inches; 400 horsepower. The engine was built by the same company as the hull. Call sign: NTHQ

There was accommodation for 50-1st, 50-2nd and 900-3rd class passengers. Launched in August 1882, she sailed from Copenhagen on her maiden voyage to Christiania (Oslo), Christiansand and New York on 6th September 1882. Service : Stettin - Copenhagen - Christiania - Christiansand - New York. In September 1898, she left Copenhagen on her last crossing for the Thingvalla Line and In October 1898 she was sold to DFDS along with the other Thingvalla Line steamers. DFDS used her for their Scandinavian America Line on the Stettin - Copenhagen - Christiania - Christiansand - New York service. On December 28th, 1898 she left Copenhegen for New York on her first voyage for DFDS. In 1900 the onwards call at Stettin was stopped. She left New York on her last voyage for the NFDS on January 1st 1905. On February 8th she arrived at Copenhagen and was laid up. In January 1906 she was sold to Calame & Cortese, Genova. Sprang leak while at Copenhagen and was broken up at La Spezia in April 1906.
