100 Years of Emigrant Ships from Norway
SHIP INDEX - PASSENGER LISTS - VOYAGE ACCOUNTS
DESCRIPTIONS - PICTURES - ARTICLES

Only short time left! - we will be closing down this site on December 23rd. Our Christmas present for you will be a brand new site, with powerful search features and new databases. You are invited, check back!

Preserving our cultural heritage and helping others are essential ingredients for the richness of life. That is why all the work we have put down, and the thousands of hours spent in order to be able to present this web site, has given us so much. We started working on the project in 1997, since then the amount of material has grown to an extent which we did not imagine when we first began. However, there is still much work to be done before our goal has been reached.

So why this focus on the ships? While the ocean separated the people, the ships represented the connection between the old land and the new country. For more than 100 years the ships between Europe and America was the most important channel for cultural exchange. We hope that the connection can be continued, and that the ships will sail for ever on the web. Let's pay a tribute to the old slogan "HANDS ACROSS THE SEA"

The information on this site is for research and educational purpose. We hope that it will be of interest and that it will help you in your research. We also hope that the site can work as a link between people who are currently researching the same issues. The list of ships may not be complete, note that errors may appear. If you discover errors, or have additional information to share, please contact us.

Those who is visiting frequently will notice some changes from time to time.

WE NEED YOUR HELP !
This project is operated on a totally volunteer, nonprofit basis. We have now reached a point where fundraising has become necessary to make the research go forward, and to secure the existence of the web site. We are looking for organizations and companies that would be willing to become our sponsors. We would also appreciate any private donations. A list of our sponsors can be seen on our sponsor page.
PROJECTS THAT NEED SUPPORT:

Reconstruction of sailing schedules from Bergen and Stavanger after 1867. To do this we need to do an in depth study of the old newspapers. They will only be available to us on microfilm. This requires equipment and ordering expenses.
Provision of pictures of several ships. We have identified pictures of ships in different public museums which we think should be made available online.
If you like, you can sponsor the specific research for a particular ship.
You can also help, by submitting material such as voyage accounts and passenger lists.

THERE ARE MORE THAN 1000 PAGES ON THIS WEB SITE

The site is maintained by Børge Solem, Gery & Sue Swiggum and Trond Austheim. We work together on this project, with great pleasure and enthusiasm. We have also received a lot of help and submissions from many of our friends and visitors to the site. Their names are mentioned on the pages where the material is found. We owe them all a lot of gratitude, and hope to continue the good relationships. We would like to mention some of our frequent helpers here: Ted Finch, Gilbert Provost, Wendy Zander, Marjorie Kohli, Debbie Beavis and Nick Evans, a special thanks to you all.
