S/S Wineland

The Wineland was built by Sir W.J.Armstrong, Mitchell & Co, Walker-on-Tyne (engines by Wallsend Slipway Co) in 1881 as the "California", for the Carr Line of Hamburg. This was a 2 690 gross ton ship, length 300,5 feet and beam 38,7 feet (91,58m x 11,79m), one funnel, two masts, single screw and a speed of 10 knots. There was capacity for 1,250 - 3rd class passengers. Launched on 27.12.1882, she sailed from Hamburg on her maiden voyage to New York on March 15th, 1883. She started her last voyage on this service on 25.5.1888 and in May 1888, was absorbed by the Hamburg America Line. She resumed Hamburg - New York voyages on July 13th 1888 and continued on this route until her last sailing on October 18th 1897. She then went to other German owners and was renamed "Irland". In 1898 she was sold to Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab of Copenhagen (United Steamship Company, owners of the Scandinavian America Line). She was then renamed "Wineland" and was operated by them until 1904, when she was sold for scrap.

According to Søren Thorsøe, who is currently working on a book about the Scandinavian America Line, the S/S Wineland was probably not operated nor owned by the company.
