Enlarge pictureSvelvik Museum is an urban museum situated next to the church in Svelvik. The museum exhibits parts of the old Forsberg shop. The shop was in business from 1882 to 1957. Ever since 1957 the shop has been locked up and kept intact, including the merchandise on the shelves. Thus, the shop offers a typical fifties shop environment. The museum owns two old fire-trucks from 1837 and Svelvik's old fire engine, an Opel Blitz from 1941. In the shipping section you can experience the era of the schooner through items from the captain's cabin, pilot's flags, ship models, navigational gear, ship trunks, and tools. The interior of a captain's cottage has been reconstructed, many paintings of sailing vessels. In Elias Kræmmer's room there is a desk, writing tools, and books, etc., possessions of businessman and author Anton B. Nilsen (1855-1936), a.k.a. Elias Kræmmer. In the handicrafts room there is a hand-operated loom, spinning wheels, mangles, irons, flax combs, and various handicraft articles. The museum also exhibits kitchen utensils from many periods. The old blue kitchen will certainly draw smiles of recognition from many visitors. The Svelvik Museum has external exhibits as well. Its collection from the old church is displayed in a little "museum chapel" inside Svelvik Church. The first vault of Svelvik Sparebank (Savings Bank) is also owned by the museum, and is situated in the branch office of Sparebanken NOR, 92 Storgaten. Further, there is a collection of items from the Svelvik Pharmacy which is exhibited on the pharmacy premises at 94 Storgaten.

Svelvik Museum is run by Svelvik Museumsforening (Museum Society), founded in 1937. The museum building was erected partly in the 18th and partly in the 19th century. In 1840 it was rebuilt as a two-storey school building, in addition to which an outbuilding was constructed. The outbuilding was torn down in 1948. The new one, erected in 1992/93 in the same spot as the previous one, originated from Brattberggården (the Brattberg building), and had to be moved to make room for a petrol station. The museum building was also used as the municipal assembly hall from 1845 to 1851. From 1851, it functioned as a poorhouse and old people's home, and was later used for social welfare purposes until 1936. In 1937, Svelvik Museum moved in.
