Serving life for sixty years

On 31 October, Norsk museum for fotografi - Preus fotomuseum opens an exhibition of the work of Lennart Nilsson, the world-famous Swedish photographer. As both a press photographer and a scientist, Lennart Nilsson has contributed significantly to our understanding of the workings of the human being. Nilsson is best known for his photographs of fetuses in the womb, which were first presented in Life in 1965. His book A child is born has sold an astonishing 50 million copies, and visitors to Norsk Museum for fotografi – Preus fotomuseum now have a unique opportunity to view an exhibition featuring these images.

Not only does the exhibition display Nilsson's well-known scientific photographs, it also shows less well-known images from inside the human body, including the vibrating vocal chords of opera singer Birgit Nilsson and a completely new set of photographs showing the different temperatures of body parts taken with a heat-sensitive camera.

The exhibition demonstrates the breadth of Lennart Nilsson's 60-year-long production, including portraits of famous personalities such as Ingrid Bergman, Louis Armstrong, Nikita Khrushchev and the Swedish royal family, as well as press photographs documenting such events as polar bear hunting as early as 1947 and the work of the Salvation Army in the 1960s.

The exhibition consists of around 150 photographs and was produced by Kulturhuset in Stockholm in collaboration with Hasse Persson, chief curator at the Hasselblad Centre in Gothenerg.

The exhibition opens on Sunday, 31 October at 2 p.m.

Opening hours: Tuesday - Sunday 12.00-17.00
