Eidsvoll bygdetun
The open-air museum Eidsvoll bygdetun consists of 26 historic
buildings put together to represent farms of different sizes from
the local area in the 19th century. All but four buildings have
been moved from different farms in the surrounding area. The buildings
are from the 18th and 19th century, illustrating in a lively manner
the life of the farmer in years past. The houses are fully furnished
and many common farming tools are displayed.
The museum was founded in 1950 by a local museum society and
donated to the local government in 1970. In addition to the open
air museum, there is a World War II museum on the grounds. During
summer there are guided tours of both the WW II and the open-air
museum.
Besides being an interesting museum, Eidsvoll bygdetun is also
a popular picnic- and recreation area. The beautiful grounds contain
lawns, woods and a lake. There are picnic tables and barbecues
for your convenience. The coffee shop is open on Sundays, and
serves traditional Norwegian food. Groups can be catered for on
weekdays too, when ordered in advance. In the museum's general
store one can buy old-fashion candy, refreshments and postcards.
During summer, several events take place at the museum. Most important
are the annual Museum Days, with entertainment, demonstration
of traditional crafts, and food stalls.
